Arts Council announces its schedule of ARTS ADVENTURES for 2008
The Springfield Regional Arts Council has put together a slate of exciting destinations for its 2008 Arts Adventures and invites all members of the community to hop on board for these fun "road trips". As an "art roadie", you'll be travelling along with other art lovers and part way through the journey, the Arts Council's resident "art expert", Bucky Bowman, will give a lecture on fascinating details of what you will be seeing at the various locations. Here is the schedule of planned trips:
Saturday, May 24 - Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis
A return visit to these gorgeous gardens as requested by our Adventurers who enjoyed a visit here last season... we'll enjoy a 6:30AM coffee reception in the Arts Council offices before departing at 7AM for St. Louis. A dutch-treat lunch will be taken at the Garden's wonderful Cafe Sassafras and adventurers will then have the entire afternoon to stroll through the exquisite floral landscapes, tour Buckminster Fuller's Climatron which houses exotic desert and tropical flora and fauna, and before departure, check out the great gift shop. On the way home, there will be a dutch-treat dinner stop at Sybill's Restaurant in St. James with return to the Creamery by 9:30pm. Cost is $80/person and includes Gardens entrance fee and Champagne and chocolates on the return.
Saturday, June 21 - Oklahoma City Museum of Art, OKC
Here's a "once in a lifetime" chance to see the exhibit, "Roman Art of the Louvre" being exhibited for the first time outside of Paris. Coffee and Danish will be served in the Arts Council office at 6:30a.m. and the group will depart the Creamery at 7:00a.m. Described as the "best collection of Roman art outside of Italy", the Louvre collection includes sculptures of Jupiter, Athena and other deities, fantastic creatures such as griffins, golden jewelry worn by Rome's elite as well as artifacts of daily life. A dutch-treat lunch will be taken in the Museum Cafe followed by a docent-led tour of the collection. Classes and Performances Available
Soorya is a not-for-profit organization foundation for Dance, founded in 2003, in order to fulfill needs of all people interested in Indian culture. The goal of Soorya is to disseminate all aspects of Indian culture especially its traditional art forms of Dance and Music. Based in Saint Louis, Missouri, Soorya offers year-round classes in the dance disciplines of Bharathanatyam and Kathak. Soorya also offers training in Carnatic Music. The curriculum is designed using traditional teaching approaches that are continuously scrutinized and modified to suit the needs and experiences of students in the United States. The dance training program has clearly defined achievement levels. To become a full-fledged dancer it is important to undergo training in three levels. At the basic level steps and jathis are taught along with instruction in dance theory. The intermediate level includes practical instruction and training to learn dance performance numbers along with advanced theory. In the final stage: the student achieves expertise in abhinaya (facial expression), nattuvangam (dance conducting) and is offered opportunities for choreography. The summer program gives intensive training in both practical and theoretical aspects for students who wish to pursue dance to a more serious level.Students of Soorya Dance perform regularly in various community events and senior students accompany Gurus Prasanna Kasthuri and Seema Murthy, the founder-directors of Soorya Dance in the presentation of their programs nationwide. In addition to imparting training in dance, music, dance theory and yoga, Soorya Foundation for Dance also organizes performances and workshops by both local and visiting artists.
Please visit their website for examples and more information: www.sooryadance.com or to enroll in classes or book a performance, email Prasanna Kasthuri at prasanna@sooryadance.com
